Miyagi Prefecture is one of the leading granary areas with plains suitable for rice cultivation, including the "Osaki arable land" which is recognized as a World Agricultural Heritage site. In the Edo period (1603-1868), one third of the rice sold in Edo was shipped to Miyagi. In addition to the long-loved "Sasanishiki" and the popular "Hitomebore," the prefecture also produces "Premium Hitomebore Miyagi Gin-Sen Rice," a high-grade rice with a distinct luster, aroma and flavor. The rice is grown using less than half the amount of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in order to ensure food safety and security and to protect the environment. The rice is grown in an environmentally friendly way, with "safety and security" added to ”deliciousness”.
